An SRL consists of a retractable cable or webbing wound on a spring-loaded drum inside a durable housing. One end connects to the worker's harness, and the other end attaches to an anchor point. Unlike static lanyards, SRLs automatically retract excess line as the worker moves, maintaining tension in the line. If a fall occurs, the SRL locks up within seconds, limiting the fall distance and reducing the impact forces on the wearer's body.
