Mezzanine and platform barriers effectively help enhance workplace safety by preventing falls and securing objects, ensuring the protection of both employees and equipment below.

As companies look to maximize existing space within their facilities, many are turning to mezzanines, elevated work platforms, or multi-level racking systems to create additional storage space or work areas for employees.

These multi-level work environments allow companies to expand useable floor space above existing operations. In many cases, expanding “up” is less costly and time-consuming than expanding “out,” which usually means adding onto existing space, leasing new space or constructing a new facility.

Based on current standards, industrial mezzanines must have handrails and gates around all edges; however, these gates need to be opened from time-to-time to accommodate the loading and unloading process. According to the ANSI standard, there must be full-time protection when loading and unloading materials from an elevated platform. There can be no exposed areas where an employee could potentially fall. As a result, many companies are seeking a solution to secure elevated work environments.

Rite-Hite offers two mezzanine safety gate solutions, the GateKeeper and the RacKeeper. The GateKeeper is a dual reciprocating barrier that makes elevated platform loading and unloading safer.

The RacKeeper functions similarly to the GateKeeper; however, it utilizes the existing rack structure to minimize the footprint in existing or new installation rack bays. These mezzanine safety gates both meet applicable OSHA, ANSI, and IBC standards, including the ANSI standard for elevated work platforms (MH28.3: 2009).

Warehouse Fence Systems

 Overview 

 Mezzanine perimeters need to be protected with gates, or other fall protection systems if the elevated level is more than 4' above the lower level. Pallet drop areas also need protection; even when a forklift is transferring materials. The GateKeeper® Safety Gate incorporates a dual-reciprocating gate to provide full-time protection at a pallet drop or material transfer area.

The GateKeeper® Mezzanine Safety Gate is a free-standing dual reciprocating barrier that ensures full time safety at the edge of a mezzanine platform when loading and unloading materials from an elevated platform.

Addresses applicable OSHA, ANSI and IBC standards:

  • OSHA standard 1910.28(b)(1) requires that employers must provide fall protection for personnel on walking-working surfaces 4'0" (1200 mm) or more above the lower level.
  • OSHA standard 1910.29(k)(1) requires that employers must ensure toeboards are used on overhead walking-working surface to protect object from falling and injuring employees below.
  • The ANSI 2009 standard section 6.4.3 published by the Storage Equipment Manufacturers Associations reads "any gate that provides an access opening through the guards for the purpose of loading and unloading material onto a work platform shall be designed such that the elevated surface is protected by guards at all times. Gates that swing open, slide open, or lift out leaving an unprotected opening in the guarding are not acceptable."
  • Exclusive Saf-T-Latch prevents workers from raising the gate from inside the work zone, helping prevent an employee from falling from the mezzanine while working the load
  • Unique link bar design ensures that both gates work in unison: when the outer gate opens to allow pallets in, the inner gate automatically closes to keep workers out and prevent access to the exposed edge
  • Toeboard prevents material from accidentally being pushed from an elevated space to a lower level and injuring anyone passing below
  • Steel side frames provide built-in track protection
  • Available in manual and automatic designs
  • 3" (75 mm) track and nylon rollers provide for smooth operation
  • Yellow powder coated 10-gauge steel frame
  • Rail heights of 21” (530 mm) and 42” (1065 mm)

Rackeeper Platform Barriers

 Overview 

This rack-supported safety gate provides full-time protection for elevated work areas. The RacKeeper® Safety Gate is perfect for multilevel pick modules, mezzanines, or any other elevated work area that requires fall protection within a racking system.
